Abstract

The present study evaluates the growth performance and nutrient utilization of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings fed varying inclusion levels of Allium ascalonicum leaf meal. Clarias gariepinus fingerlings of initial mean weight of 6.93 ± 0.0g were evaluated for a period of 56 days. Five iso-nitrogenous experimental diets were formulated at varying inclusion levels; (0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0) g/100 g of A. ascalonicum leaf meal. Fish were randomly distributed into tanks at 15 fish/tank with each treatment in triplicate. At the expiration of the feeding trials, results showed significant differences (p<0.05) in growth performance, nutrient utilization and proximate composition (moisture, protein, carbohydrate, fat, ash and calorific contents) of C. gariepinus fingerlings with increasing inclusion of A. ascalonicum leaf meal. C. gariepinus fingerlings fed 1.0g/100g diet of A. ascalonicum recorded the best growth performance with respect to body weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR) muscle proximate composition. (P<0.05). A differential equation (y = 15.8x4 - 62.467x3 + 68.05x2- 14.383x + 19.4R² = 1) showed that optimum growth occurred at A. ascalonicum supplementation level of approximately 0.59 g/100g. Variations in Serum biochemical and haematological parameters of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings were observed among treatments for all measured parameters. The results revealed that A. ascalonicum leaf meal supplementation significantly improved growth, nutrient utilization parameters, haematological and biochemical profile of C. gariepinus fingerlings compared to control.
