Abstract

ABSTRACT

Employees' satisfaction with human resource management practices (HRMP) is a major concern within the hospitality industry. This research focused on socio-economic and organisational issues influencing employees’ satisfaction with HRMP in the hospitality industry in Lagos State, Nigeria. The research was carried out in three out of five divisions in the State which included Ikeja, Ikorodu and Lagos Island. The sample consisted of employees working in 56 hospitality establishments including hotels and accommodation, restaurants/eateries, recreation and entertainment, and travel and tourism. The number of questionnaires distributed was 598 with 524 of them returned and analysed giving a 87.6% response rate. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square, and multiple linear regression. Results showed that most respondents were female in all the sectors, also, years of experience was majorly 1-10, and respondents work across small, medium, and large organisations. Employees responded most favourably to orientation programmes (mean range = 2.62-2.77), while salary and wage (mean range = 1.58-2.13) and insurance benefits, including health and life insurance (mean range = 1.40-1.98), ranked lowest. The regression model was strong (R = 0.87; R2 = 0.76). Employee type, organisational membership, ratings, type of business, position/level, organisation size, number of employees, and recruitment source had significant effects (p < 0.01), whereas gender, years of experience, business location, and company age were not significant. The research suggests better compensation and insurance plans, systematic recruitment, enhanced professional growth, and standardisation of HR to increase employee satisfaction and quality of service.
