Sustainable Road Freight Distribution and Corridor Logistics Performance on Major Freight Routes in Lagos

Abstract

This study investigated the spatial and operational logistics patterns within seven signature freight routes in Lagos that supports sustainable freight distribution. Specifically, it quantified 19-years (2005–2023) trends in freight vehicle registration, safety regulations compliance, and accident rate. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study revealed that while freight vehicle accidents have decreased annually by 58.77 cases, safety non-compliance increased by 3,612.45 incidents posing sustainability and safety risks. Further, the average hourly, daily and weekly freight mobility for Lagos-Ibadan, Oshodi-Apapa and Lekki-Epe corridors stood at 28,153 (32.5%), 4,021.86 (10.55%), and 1,677.1 (3.29%) vehicles respectively; underscoring critical infrastructure needs. Policy recommendations include cluster-based infrastructural investment, and targeted regulatory enforcement aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and logistics performance. Findings offer actionable insights for road freight policy, transport planning, and sustainable logistics eco-system in Lagos.
